Disaster Recovery

Disaster recovery – a necessity in the digital age

Disaster Recovery Could Your Systems Recover?

Disaster Recovery, do you have a plan in place?

We live our lives online. We store our memories, our favourite articles and sources, our precious photographs, all on our hard drives.

If you have ever had the misfortune of a computer sighing a last breath or a virus that wiped your hard drive then you know the frustration, panic and upset that brings. All those photographs that you will never get back, so much tucked away in files, that you have forgotten the extent of the contents.

Imagine that it’s not personal information that has been wiped. It is your business data. This is why disaster recovery is an essential part of your Business IT solution.

Looking Back

Disaster recovery goes back to the mid to late 1970’s when it was evident that some sort of plan was required. Back then mainframes could be out of action for days without significant impact. The recovery industry however, was born. Over two decades, the growth of real time processing ensured dependence on IT systems. It has now reached a level where continuity planning is an essential part of any business planning.

From the late 90’s, regulatory bodies began to legislate -understanding the chaos that would ensue should systems fail. Add to that the very real threat of environmental disaster, terrorist attack and cyber crime and suddenly the internet became both blessing and curse to business.

Technological advances created the opportunity for off site assistance to become remote and now we have cloud technology and a new world of security needs.

Statistically Speaking

Statistics are everywhere regarding disaster recovery. *One American article claimed that,” 43% of US companies experiencing disasters never re-open and 29% close within 2 years.” Do the statistics paint a true picture? Also, I found a very interesting different view from 2008 entitled the 80% Myth by Mel Gosling – see further reading.

The fact remains, in spite of statistics being recycled. In truth, the need in 2016 for a comprehensive protection plan for industry is beyond any question. Disaster is a server crash away and no business can afford the loss, even as far as time spent on resources to effect a recovery.

The London Chamber urges UK organisations to protect themselves:

“The chronic lack of preparedness on the part of small and medium-sized firms is the greatest avoidable threat in the capital today. Directors owe it to themselves, their employees and other firms in the supply chain which depend on them to take action now.”

“Directors should identify an alternative temporary business site which is located well away from the main building.  It is imperative that the secondary location is not served exclusively by the same utility companies or communication company as the primary location.”

LCCI president Michael Cassidy

Simple Truth

The simple truth of the matter is you need to prepare a disaster recovery plan. If you walked into a system failure tomorrow could your business survive, could you recover your data, your financial information and your history? Do you have a secondary storage system so you could back up and start again?

Consider the following:

  • Could you rebuild your client list from another source?
  • Would you know your status financially in real time?
  • Would you be able to meet salary requirements?
  • Could you continue production?
  • Would you remain operational?
  • Would you sustain financial losses and survive?
  • Can you reinstate your software complete with all licensing?

In addition, IT systems, no matter how robust, are susceptible to disaster from an increasing variety of sources. Moreover, some risks are exceptional such as fire, power failure, extreme weather and criminal sabotage.

Finally, there are other factors such as viruses, security breaches, malware, software issues, hardware failure, data corruption and of course the most common – human error.

Data recovery is just one facet of a managed Disaster Recovery Plan. Furthermore, a managed service will tailor the correct solution for your business after a detailed consultation and be flexible enough to adapt as your business grows.

Disaster Recovery Case study

Already this year one of our clients was seriously affected by the extreme weather. They had a custom designed basement with flood proof protection installed.  Unfortunately, they awoke to a submerged server cabinet when the water pump system failed. Consequently, all live company data was destroyed.

Thankfully, the client had a managed Disaster Recovery Plan with ourselves. We installed a new server cabinet and recovered 98% of data within 2 hours. We take pride in having one of the fastest response times in the industry.
